Den 6 mars 1857 solgte de Viken på auksjon og dro til USA. Brødrene til Nils, Lars og Hans hadde emigrert allerede i 1846 og 1851. De hadde slått seg ned i La Crosse i Wisconsin, så det var dit Nils og Marit la vegen. Etter en sjøreise med seilskip, som tok flere uker, slo de seg ned i Manitowoc, WI.

Marilyn Holien Ettesvold skriver: "Much of the good land in eastern Wisconsin had already been taken up, so Nils and Marit moved west to Bostwick Valley near LaCrosse in 1861 and joined the Lutheran Church there. There son, Knut was confirmed there in 1865, and shortly thereafter they, too, left for Goodhue County. They settled on a homestead near Marit (his step daughter) and Torger (Eltun) in Warsaw Township, a stone's throw from the farms of Haagen an d Ole Holien. Nils died in 1867 and was probably buried on the farm, as no church records exist concerning his death or burial. Although Vang Lutheran Church was built in 1862, the ministers were often gone on long missionary journeys and many vital statistic s were not recorded.

Marilyn Holien Ettesvold skriver: "In the 1870 census, Marit and her four sons are listed on the farm. Together, they had joined the Vang Church on 7. January 1869. On the 26. April 1869, Marits mother, Mali Christophersdtr, died in Goodhue County and was buried in the Vang cementary. Sønnen Erik overtalte henne og halvbrødrene til å komme etter til Renville, som akkurat da var åpnet for nybyggere. Så står det videre hos Marilyn: "In the spring of 1875, the farm in Goodhue County was sold and Marit moved to his sons in Renville together with her sons Eric and Ole. Torger and Marit remained where they had lived out of there lives on their homestead. They had three sons an d five daughters, but three of their children died in childhood. Emma was the only one to marry, and she and her husband (Ed Vollmer) were childless. They lived in Northfield and Ed was a jeweler. Da de flyttet til Renville, bodde Marit først hos sin sønn Ole, men da han giftet seg i 1890, flyttet hun til sønnen Knut og hans kone Betsey, Der døde hun av tuberkulose i 1898.
