I have promised you to tell you a little more about Jørgen Jensen Bratt's ancestors. The part comes here. At first I have to tell you, however, that this information is quite new in the meaning that it is not published. I am studying the people who worked at Aardal Copper Work between 1702 and 1734 and have been hooked by the idea to find out as much as possible about these peoples family. In a few years I will publish some articles about my findings.

I stress this because for two reasons. First because some of my findings are not quite straight forward, and it is necessary with some critic digestion of this by other genealogist before I feel quite comfortable in spreading the results too much. Next I tell you this because I am very lucky for each piece of the puzzle I get, and you definitly gave me one interesting piece. So to the people:

************************************************ Jens Gulbrandsen (Bratt) and Mari Jørgensdatter EIDET

Jens was born in Kaupanger abt, 1666, but his death or burial is not found yet. What we know is that he still lived in 1729 and was dead in 1740. Jens was a son of Gulbrand Jensen BRATT (b.bef.1635) and Marie Olufsdatter LYSTRUP (b.abt.1639).

In the early 1690s Jens farmed at Vestrem in Kaupanger, but in 1692 or 1693 he moved to Jevnaker in Aardal. The background for this was that a cousin of him, Peder Nilsen BRATT, who had bought Jevnaker some years earlier, died in 1692. Peder's wife, Maren Knutsdatter, also died this year so the farm had to be kept in order until the children of Peder and Maren were able to take over. In 1704 Jens therefore had to move from Jevnaker, but it is not known to which farm he moved.

Around 1711 Jens started to work at Aardal Copper Works which was established in 1702. The first years the activity in these works were quite limited, but because of small amounts of gold in the ore, the King bought the mines in 1708 and this led to an increase in the development. Jens seems to have been engaged in works on buildings and other constructions, but from 1720 (or earlier) he were responsible for the operation of the Steggje sawmill in Aardal. This sawmill was owned by the Copper Works. jens worked as the master at the sawmill until 1728. Then it is said in documents from the Copper Works that he was to old to have this work. For about a year he went working at the Copper Works, but after 1729 he is not seen in the documents anymore.

Jens was abt. 1690 married to Mari Jørgensdatter EIDET. She also was from Kaupanger. Her father was Jørgen Jonsen EIDET (d.abt.1680) and her mother was Guri Pedersdatter AMLA (d.abt.1720). Unfortunately we don't know anything about Mari's birth or death by now. However, she was at least dead in 1740. Jens and Mari had at least six children: Malene (b.abt.1691), Gulbrand (b.abt.1692), Jørgen (the father of Sissel Jørgensen BRATT), Jens (b.abt. 1607), Jon (b.abt.1699), and Marie. *************************************************

There you see Jørgen # years old. This may be your Jørgen, but some information indicate that this first Jørgen died and that your Jørgen is a son born after 1701. Perhaps I will find out some time.

As I promised, I will send you some data about the parents of Jens Gulbrandsen (BRATT) and his wife. Beside my own studies of probate and church book records the information is based on an article in the periodical "Norsk Slektshistorisk Tidskrift" written by Henning Sollied in 1927. This article is very often referred to and is a basic article in the research of the BRATT family. At first the parents of Jens, and then the parents of Mari Jørgensdatter EIDET:

Gulbrand was born at Hovland farm in Kaupanger probably in the 1630s. He took over the Hovland farm from his father and died there between 1687 and 1698. He married Marie Olufsdatter who was born abt. 1639. They had at least these sons: Jens (b.abt.1666), Hans (abt.1671-1710), Oluf (abt.1676-abt.1715), Christen (b.abt.1682) and Skak (b.abt.1676). They also had some daughters, but I just know Kari who was born bef. 1680 and died in 1710. However, Kirsten (abt.1670-1733) was probably also a daughter of Gulbrand and Marie.

Gudbrand married Marie Olufsdtr LYSTRUP. Marie (daughter of Ola Skakksøn LYSTRUP and Karen JONSDTR) was born about 1639 in Vestreim, Kaupanger; died in Hovland I Kaupanger. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Jørgen was born bef. 1654 and died abt. 1681. Not too much is known about him, but was a quite prosperous farmer at Eidet farm in Kaupanger. He married Guri Pedersdatter AMLA who was born at Amla farm in Kaupanger bef. 1655 and died at Eidet abt. 1720. Guri was married three times. The first man is called Peder, but his identity is not known quite sure yet. Jørgen was Guri's second man and her third man was Nils Christensen EIDET. Guri and Jørgen had at least these children: Mari, Malene, Jon (abt.1674-1727), Jens.

Jens Nilsen BRATT

He was living at Hovland in Kaupanger in 1620. He died abt. 1664. The name of his wife is not known, but when he was dead she married Oluf Skaksen LYSTRUP.

As you see, not too much is known about this BRATT family. Nevertheless, Sollied means that there must have been a connection to the better known BRATT family in Gudbrandsdalen. This was a noble family in the Middle Ages. The connection is seen through the ownership of some land property.

He was born at Vestrem farm in Kaupanger abt. 1618 and died in 1699. He was married to Karen Jonsdatter who died 1658. He then married again, but her name is not known. However she was a widow after Jens Nilsen BRATT. Oluf and Karen had a lot of daughters. These are known: Karen; Marte; Aagot; Anne; Bodil; Inger; Marie Olufsdatter (LYSTRUP) who married Gulbrand Jensen BRATT.

Ola married Karen JONSDTR. Karen died in 1568 in Vestreim, Kaupanger. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
