By this time, Minnesota land was at a premium and those with pioneer blood were looking to north and west for further settlement. In 1905, Ole and his brother, Edwi n, headed for North Dakota with Henry Sloan (svogeren) and a cousin, Ole Heen. The filed on homesteads to the north of Hebron, built temporary shacks, and then returned for their possessions. They moved their belongings by boxcar and Ole's wife and sister Minnie and Bertha, followed on a passenger train. Bertha filed an a claim in Mercer County and her brothers built a shack for her to.

Ole and Minnie built a sod house on their homestead and in 1906, Viviette was born. Evelyn joined the family in 1909 and Orville in 1914. The railroad had come to Halliday, so they sold the farm and moved there, where Ole ran a garage. A son, Ever ett (Jack) was born in Halliday and the family lived there, where until moving to Minnesota. Besides , being a garage mechanic, Ole was also a merchant , carpenter, horse doctor, salesman, and embalmer. In 1923, Ole with his family, and brother Edwin with his, bought property on shores of Pelican lake in Otter Tail County and went to live there. There mother Berith came too, and built a home in Detroit Lakes. They lived in tents on the lakes shore when they built homes - Ole on the shore of what is now called Viken Bay, and Ed down a wagon trail and inland.

Ole and Minnies home was beside the lake and they kept the livestock across the road. In the winter, they harvested ice from the lake and kept the blocks, buried in sawdust, in a big, wonderful-smelling building. Fishing was good, summer and winte r, and Minnie made marvelous pickled white fish. In season, there was venison, as deer abounded in the area.

Several years later, Ole sold the lake shore property to Mr. Reiff, who started a resort (Pelican Beach Resort), and Ole and Minnie built a new home across the road. They had a few cows, chickens, and horses and Ole did work for the "cottage-peopl e" who were beginning to populate the shoreline. Fiddle music was often heard coming from their house, as Ole loved to entertain guests with the old time melodies. A soft spoken gentle woman, Minnie bustled about her home and garden and kept up const ant chatter. Mother Berith had been in failing health and was

Marilyn Holien Ettesvold skriver: "On his visits back home, he persuaded his brothers and mother to join him. The region was newly opened for settlement and each of the boys wanted land of their own. Erik Erikson had worked for nearby farmers in Goodhue County and had saved a little money before going to Renville. He met Berith Olsdtr Kattevold while she was working in Northfield and they were married 12 January 1874 at farm home of Marit (hi s sister Hbs anmrk.) and her husband Torger. Official witnesses of the ceremony were neighbors, Ole Knutsen Holien and Ole Jensen Broin.

Erik and Berith worked hard that first summer to get things in readiness for the long winter ahead. Exactly nine months from the date of their wedding, Berith gave birth to two twins, Maria and Erick. The timing of the birth was a source of amusem ent to the couple all during their wedded lives! The boy was small and weak, however, and died soon after birth. Two years later another Erick was born, who lived to almost the age of three. In 1887, Ole was born, in 1880, Bertha, in 1883, Edwi n and in 1885, Eric. Wang Township was organized in 1875 and Erik was elected a supervisor. The first church in the township was Vestre Sogn, organized in 1868, and build in 1881. Erik and Berith were early members, helped build the church, and Re. Johannes Bergh bapt ized their first six children. Vestre Sogn had been sister church to Our Savior's Lutheran in Sacred Heart, but a rift separated the two and a group split off and formed Wang Lutheran Church, which was built in 1885. Pastor A.H. Gjevre baptized Yo ung Eric there. One fall, when he was plowing, he became thirsty and paused to drink water from a small pond. The water was polluted and Erik contracted typhoid fever, from which he died on 12 November 1885. He was buried in the cemetery at Vestre Sogn, the churc h he helped to build and support.
