Berit Olsdatter and August Gulliksen must have begun their courtship soon after Berit's arrival, for they were married in Gjerpen Church on December 14, 1858. August was the son of Berit's half-uncle Gullik Gulbrandsen Berge, so the couple were co usins or, more accurately, half-cousins. August Gulliksen acquired land that adjoined the farm of his uncle, Gulbrand Gulbrandsen. The matter of surnames again presents itself. Two of the three brothers who shared the patronymic "Gulbrandsen", Gullik and Helge, adopted the surname "Berge ". But Gulbrand took the patronymic, as his surname. August might have followed his father, taking „Berge", but instead chose "Gulliksen", his own patronymic.
