    • Haberdasher of hats. Served in a Guild as an apprentice age 14-21. Did not come over for religious reasons but to get away from the tyranny of Charles I who was increasing the taxes on the guilds. He never joined a church, though he was obliged to attend. Only church members could be freemen so he never cast a vote nor held public office. * Bonds Watertown (1860) pp3-7 WALTER ALLEN was of Newbury, 1640 and resided there several years. He moved to Watertown prior to April 1662, at which time he was a proproprietor, and was one of a coroner's jury, July 19, 1663. April 20, 1665, Walter Allen and wife Rebecca sold their house and land in Watertown to Simon Coolidge, bounded partly by his own (W. A.'s) land. June 7, 1665, he bought of John Knapp 60 acres in Watertown Farms, ''Iying towards Concord bounds."

      Sept. 19, 1666,'Thomas Mayhew' sometime of Watertown, now of Martha's Vineyard, for £30, sold the 200 acres of land in Watertown Farms, granted to him by the town, to Joseph Crosby, of Braintree; and said Crosby, for £40, sold the same land. June 21, 1669. to Walter Allen, " a farmer of Watertown" Oct. 1. 1673 by deed of gift, he conveyed lands in Watertown to his sons, Daniel and Joseph, and soon after moved to Charlestown where he m., Nov. 29, 1678, Abigail Rogers, and where he died , Jul 8, 1681. In Charlestown he was a "haberdasher of hats". His will, dated Feb 19, 1679-8-, proved Aug. 1681, mentions wife Abigail and sons John [of Sud.], Daniel and Joseph. Inventory £312. It included "the Mayhew Farm," near Sud. (2000 A.), another farm, 705A.[probably 75A.], and 6 A. of meadow; 2 A. dividend land; mansion house, land, and orchard in Charlestown; and a farm in Haverhill 100A. He had a son Benjamin, b. in Newbury, 1647; and there was a Benjamin Allen settled in Watertown about the same time as Walter and his sons; but no son, Benjamin is mentioned in the will or other instruments executed by Walter. Lewis Allen was an early settler of Wat. (1665), but there is no evidence that he was a kinsman of Walter.

      Newbury by 1640. Proprietor's book of records, folio forty-four, extracted by Joshua Coffin from the record dated December 1642 and is the first known list of the first Settlers of Newbury. Charlestown abt.1652. His house was on Main St. in Watertown 1662 and bought a 75 acre farm from Nathaniel Bowman. Added 160 acres in 1665; Another 200 acres in 1669. He returned to Charlestown in in 1673 and stayed till death. He was 77 at time of 3rd marriage and was 80 at death.
