    Notes
    • An Elijah Parmeter is listed as head of the family in the 1820 Federal Census for Caledonia , Genesee County, New York. The household consisted of 1 male (under 10 yrs.), 1 male (16-26 yrs.), 2 males (over 45 yrs.), 1 female (under 10 yrs.) and 1 female (16-26 yrs.). It is uncertain if this is Bliss's family. It is inconsistent if he is the head of the family with a young wife, because he was married in 1821. It is unlikely that Bliss's father is one of the older two men because he appears in the 1820 census for Poultney, Vermont, where he is known to have lived from other sources.

Bliss Palmeter is listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Concord, Saratoga County, New York (M19 roll 108), p. 184. The household consisted of 1 male (30-40 yrs.), 3 females (0-5, 5-10 and 20-30 yrs.).

In the 1840 Federal Census, Bliss Parmeter and family are listed in the Town of Marion, Wayne County, New York. Two males are under age 5, 1 male age 5-10, 1 male age 30-40, 1 female under age 5, 1 female age 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female age 15-20, 1 female age 30-40.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Bliss Palmeter (age 47, no occupation) and family are listed in the Town of Mexico, Oswego County, New York. Named with him are Mary (age 45), Benjamin (age 18, laborer), Silas (age 15), Loydia(?) M. (male age 13), Angeline (age 11) and Sina (age 9).

In the 1860 Federal Census for Mexico, Bliss Parmatier, age 61, was a farmer with $300 of real estate and $200 personal estate. His household included Rachel age 58, L.M (male) age 22, A.E. age 20 (female) and Rhoda age 17 (female). [Why is Rhoda not included in the 1850 census?]

There were 7 daughters, two of them twins. Bliss probably came to Minnesota with Silas, Benjamin and their families in September of 1865, just after the Civil War.

The three St. Cloud newspapers were searched for a death notice or obituary, but they had hardly any such notices and nothing was found for Bliss.

The North Star Cemetery is a Masonic cemetery, used not only for Masons but for Protestants in general. It was established in 1864.

Bliss was also the given name of James Smith's second son, who would have been a first cousin of Benjamin Parmeter's first wife, Azubah Cleveland.

On Mary Parmeter Maxam's death certificate, the name Elijah Parmeter is given for her father. Bliss was probably a middle name.

In an image of "Protrait and Biographical Record of Muskegon and Ottawa Counties, Michigan", 1893, p. 566, online from Ancestry.com, there is a short biography of B.D. King, M.D., who resided at 122 South Terrace St., Muskegon, Michigan. "The mother, Jane (Palmeter) King, was of New England birth and, a native of Vermont, was the daughter of Bliss Palmeter, also born in the Green Mountain State. The Palmeters, who were of Scotch-Irish extraction, settled in America before the French War and are numbered among the most loyal citizens of our country. Dr. King spent the days of boyhood in Oswego County, N.Y., and prepared for college in the public schools." [6]

    • Nobletown was renamed Hillsdale, which is now in Columbia County. Columbia County did not exist until 1786. At one time, Hillsdale (or Nobletown) and other towns in this area were included within Berkshire County, Massachusetts, because of an ongoing border dispute. In a 1773 agreement between Massachusetts and New York, the current border was fixed, but not ratified by both states until 1901.
