Notes |
- She was heavily involved with the management of the Grindaheim hotel and country store after her marriage to Helge. When refugees from Oslo, and sometimes German soldiers, stayed at the hotel during the war, she was known to go from farm to farm smuggling food, which was strictly controlled by the Nazi regime.
Following Helge's death in 1958, she managed the two hotels and modernized them. She also managed the corner store. They were childless. In 1970 she turned over the operation of the businesses to the daughters of Gina, her sister-in-law. Marit Solemsli ran the hotel and farm while Synnøve ran the store. In a real estate transfer with Vang township in 1968, Marit gave up Lindalen for use by the town for a community house, and Marit received 32/2 Klokkarhaugadn, a protected historical building, with the responsibility to maintain it. Klokkarhaugen lies justs across the road from the old Fagerli hotel and was used for some time by Marit Solemsli as a gift store. The farmland had been leased for many years, even before Marit took over. Jon Kattevold farmed Nordigarden from 1959 to 1964; he was the last to have cows there. In 1977, Knut Lajord, Ellingbø, farmed half and Leif Solemsli Jr. farmed the other half.
After Marit had retired from managing the hotel, she spent a number of years in Oslo, managing Per Aabel's household. She returned to Grindaheim in the summers, living sometimes in the upstairs over the store and sometimes in the old Nordigarden house up on the hillside. In her final years she lived at old nursing home.
