- Arrived in America on April 1635 in the ship "Elizabeth," which sailed from Lydd, Kent, England, under the helm of Captain Stagg, with passengers for Massachusetts Bay. Among them were James Bates and his daughter Johanna. Another passenger was supposed to be "Goodman" Gabriel Mead, who married Joanna Bates, was admitted a freeman in 1638, and became a prominent citizen of Cambridge. His brother William removed to Connecticut and was founder of the Connecticut branch of the family. [1, 2]
