"The Hermundstad farm where Kari Hermundstad grew up dates bac k to the Vikings. Kari's father, Peder or Per, bought the farm in April 1854, and the farm has been in the same family since, at present the sixth generation.... There are many paintings of the Hermundstad farm by the famous Norwegian artist, Eilif Pettersen. He spent many summers in the late 1800s and early 1900s at the hotel on the neighboring farm, Skogstad."
THE HERMUNDSTAD FARM The Hermundstad farm lies in the middle of the Upper Valley, 590-600 meters above sea level. The old yard lies on a ridge with knolls farther down on the fields and the Western edge falling steeply down to the river Begna. The fields nearest th e farmyard fall in rolling hills from the farmyard and become steeper farther up the meadow. Farther up are the outlying fields which cross Berga to the mountains. On the southwest side of the river are the mountain fields with birch trees an d a bit of fields along the river. Between the farmyard and the river is Suandberget. The boundary toward the Grov farm follows Suand. The farm is likely from the Viking era. The name means "Hermund's place" derived from the male name Hermund (which is very seldom used anymore). From the beginnings, the church parish at Ardal in Sogn owned part (2 skins) of the Hermundstad farm , the only farm in Valdres party owned by a church in Sogn. From the mid-1600's the parish priest at Vang also owned part (3 skins) of the property. However, from the beginnings most of the farm was farmland, and 19 of 23 skins were privately owne d. The farm was split in the 1600's into a South farm and a North farm with about 30-40 meters of land dividing them. Later, in the 1700's, the North farm was split in two farm 5/4 at 7 2/3 skins and farm 5/3 (called Haugen) at 3 5/6 skins lying fart hest north- These two farmyards lie close together with no land in between. Therefore, there are three farms at Hermundstad and the families on those farms with the last name Hermundstad are not necessarily related. Some of the owners and/or dwellers of portions of the North farm 5/4 (Nordre Hermundstad, Nordigarden) dating back to the 1600's were Andris Torgeirsson, Torkjell Tomasson Eltun, Andris Torkjellson, Eirik Trondsson Brekke, Oystein Toresson Dal, Tr ond Eiriksson Eltun, Hallstein Nilsson Skogstad, Old Tomasson Uvdal, Guttorm Torsteinsson Kasa, Trond Hallsteinsson Hermundstad, Kristen Olsson Hamre, Nils Hallsteinsson, Nils Knutsson Hole, Knut Nilsson, Knut Olsson (Turtnes) Nystoga, and Old Knu tsson Hermundstad. Knut Nilsson (born 1793) sold several acreages including hayland, meadowland, and wood plots to Knut Olsson (Turtnes) Nystoga (born 1806) on 30 October 1839 for 500 spd and some livestock. Knut Olsson Turtnes was the postmaster at Nystogun (Nystue n) for many years and later a cottager at the neighboring farm Uvdal. His oldest son, Old Knutsson Hermundstad (born 1828) bought the farm from his father on 2 September 1843 for 525 spd. At that time, there was one horse, 9-10 cattle, and 8-10 sh eep and goats. Old Knutsson Hermundstad owned the farm from 1843-54. He sold the farm on 6 April 1854 to Per Persson Purkestad (born 1827) for 300 spd. and emigrated to America. Per Persson Purkestad brought his family with him from Hemsedal, Gol, Hallingdal and settled at 5/4 Nordigarden. He lived there for the rest of his life and took on the last name Hermundstad, as was the custom in those days, It is here that Kar i Hermundstad was born on August 2, 1858, the fifth child of Per and his wife, Anne.
