Gjertrud joined Vang Church, Goodhue Co., MN, 1869. In the 1880 Minnesota census, Gertrud is shown living with so n "Christ" and family, all using the last name Thompson. In the same census, Berit is shown living with Lars and family, also they use the name Thompson. Son Thomas and family uses the name Twite in the census. According to Forrest Brown of th e Norwegian American Historical Association, some family records appear under the name Thompsen and others under the name Tveit.
