- Silas learned the cooper's trade and resided with his parents until the age of 21, when he moved with his wife and first-born child to Minnesota. He worked as a cooper for one year in Dakota county, then moved to Wright county. Here, in April of 1859, he was involved in a lynching. He is listed in the 1860 Minnesota census (age 25) with Mary A. (age 27), Frank (age 4), Alida J. (age 3) and Carlton M. (age 1).
In the fall of 1861, he enlisted at Fort Snelling in Company A of the 2nd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry as a sharpshooter. He participated in the fighting at Fredericksburg in April 1862 and was discharged the following August for disability. He then returned with his family to Mexico, New York, where he re-enlisted in Company C of the 40th New York Infantry. He was in the battle of Petersburg in April and was mustered out the following July. He then returned to Minnesota with his family. It appears that he was also accompanied by his brother's family and his father Bliss. Until 1876 he was engaged in a variety of occupations that included farming and hotel keeping.
In the 1885 Minnesota State Census, taken 1 May (page 408, lines 2-10), Silas (age 50) was living in Langola, Benton County, with the following persons: Eliza Parmeter (age 49), Frank Parmeter (age 30), Carson Parmeter (age 27), John Parmeter (age 12), ---- Parmeter (age 10), Blanche Parmeter (age 9), Hattie Parmeter (age 7) and Melvin Parmeter (age 4). Silas and Frank are listed as having been born in New York, Eliza in Canada, and all the others in Minnesota.
In 1890, in his third marriage, they moved to Spokane, Washington, where he received an appointment as special policeman, than was placed on the regular police force. He continued working as a policeman until 1899 when he became the proprietor of a feed store at 803 Monroe Steet and also maintained a hotel. He died of pneumonia. He is listed in the "History of Spokane County" as being "one of the substantial and respected citizens of Spokane." He is buried in Spokane next to his third wife, Mary Ann Ashwell.
