Personal Information    |    PDF

  • Name Richard "Strongbow" DE CLARE
    Suffix , Earl of Pembroke
    Nickname Strongbow
    Birth Abt 1130
    Gender Male
Occupation 2nd Earl of Pembroke, Earl of Striguil, Justiciar of Ireland
    Death Abt 20 Apr 1176
    Notes
    • He was invited to Ireland by one of the many Irish kings, Dermot MacMurrough, whose lands in Leinster had been seized by the High King, Rory O'Connor. This was, of course, an excuse for an invasion. Strongbow gained a foothold in Wexford and the south-east part of Ireland which was only 40 miles across the sea from his land in Pembroke. He was successful in his military campaigns mainly because of his superior weapons and heavily armoured knights, mounted on horseback.
