- In the fall of 1684 and spring of 1685, the brothers James and Samuel, along with six other families, purchased land from the Indians and made the first settlement at Paquiogue, which they called Danbury. James sold his property in Norwalk to Samuel Smith on March 26, 1691. On Sunday morning, April 27, 1777, the British under Governor Tyron burned Danbury (nineteen dwelling houses), except for the houses belonging to Tories. [1]
