    Notes
    • His mother died when he was young and his father married a second wife, who was a widow, who had a daughter named Mary Bridgum. In 1638 he and Mary came to New England in the same vessel ("Confidence") and first settled in "The Massachusetts Bay." The first station of this colony was established at Cape Ann in 1623. The settlement was moved to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1628. They were soon married, presumably in Massachusetts, then moved to Southold, Long Island, where five sons and 4 daughters were born. They removed to Huntington, where they resided for several years. In 1656 they were living in Huntington. They then removed to Jamaica, Long Island, where they were living in 1664, when Thomas was chosen to be a delegate to the first English legislative body believed to have been convened in New York. In 1665, he was commissioned by Governor Nichols as a Lieutenant "of the Foot Company of Jamaica." His commission was dated at "Fort James in New York, the 7th day of April, 1665." In this same year Thomas and his family removed to Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1669 he was town clerk and listed among the 42 freemen of the town. Again in 1672 he was chosen as town clerk and he held the office for many years. He was made a deacon of the church in Norwalk.

From New England Ancestors, Winter 2009, Vol. 10, no. 1, p. 28: "Thomas Benedict's career also illustrates the need to consult records in multiple jurisdictions. After several years as a civic leader in three different parts of Long Island (Southold, Huntington and Jamaica), he considered moving to East New Jersey but instead moved across the Sound to Norwalk, Connecticut by 1665. He helped establish Danbury, inland from Norwalk, in 1684. As a result, Benedict was mentioned in the records of four colonies (New Haven, Connecticut, New Netherland, and New York), a proprietary government (East Jersey), and one confederation (the United Colonies of New England). Figure 3 illustrates Thomas Benedict's migrations within the region." [1, 2, 3]
