Notes |
- The founder of Wessex, was claimed as the ancestor of the West Saxon royal line, the Cerdicingas. He is said to have landed with his son Cynric at Cerdicesora, in 495. Cerdic's own origins are complicated by the fact that he, like some of his successors, bears a Celtic name, the British Ceretic (Caradoc). A British strain in the West Saxon royal house is not unlikely. The hypothesis that King Arthur of legend was his father has been put forth by Geoffrey Asche.
