I have promised you to tell you a little more about Jørgen Jensen Bratt's ancestors. The part comes here. At first I have to tell you, however, that this information is quite new in the meaning that it is not published. I am studying the people who worked at Aardal Copper Work between 1702 and 1734 and have been hooked by the idea to find out as much as possible about these peoples family. In a few years I will publish some articles about my findings. I stress this because for two reasons. First because some of my findings are not quite straight forward, and it is necessary with some critic digestion of this by other genealogist before I feel quite comfortable in spreading the results too much. Next I tell you this because I am very lucky for each piece of the puzzle I get, and you definitly gave me one interesting piece. So to the people: ************************************************ Jens Gulbrandsen (Bratt) and Mari Jørgensdatter EIDET Jens was born in Kaupanger abt, 1666, but his death or burial is not found yet. What we know is that he still lived in 1729 and was dead in 1740. Jens was a son of Gulbrand Jensen BRATT (b.bef.1635) and Marie Olufsdatter LYSTRUP (b.abt.1639). In the early 1690s Jens farmed at Vestrem in Kaupanger, but in 1692 or 1693 he moved to Jevnaker in Aardal. The background for this was that a cousin of him, Peder Nilsen BRATT, who had bought Jevnaker some years earlier, died in 1692. Peder's wife, Maren Knutsdatter, also died this year so the farm had to be kept in order until the children of Peder and Maren were able to take over. In 1704 Jens therefore had to move from Jevnaker, but it is not known to which farm he moved. Around 1711 Jens started to work at Aardal Copper Works which was established in 1702. The first years the activity in these works were quite limited, but because of small amounts of gold in the ore, the King bought the mines in 1708 and this led to an increase in the development. Jens seems to have been engaged in works on buildings and other constructions, but from 1720 (or earlier) he were responsible for the operation of the Steggje sawmill in Aardal. This sawmill was owned by the Copper Works. jens worked as the master at the sawmill until 1728. Then it is said in documents from the Copper Works that he was to old to have this work. For about a year he went working at the Copper Works, but after 1729 he is not seen in the documents anymore. Jens was abt. 1690 married to Mari Jørgensdatter EIDET. She also was from Kaupanger. Her father was Jørgen Jonsen EIDET (d.abt.1680) and her mother was Guri Pedersdatter AMLA (d.abt.1720). Unfortunately we don't know anything about Mari's birth or death by now. However, she was at least dead in 1740. This may be your Jørgen, but some information indicate that this first Jørgen died and that your Jørgen is a son born after 1701. Perhaps I will find out some time.
