- Ardal Bydgebok says they had 3 children, but only lists the 2. However,Marlene Johnson (Plymouth, MN.) said her grandmother was Gunnild born Dec 14,1854.
Fact: Norwegian naming traditions are unique to this country. The givenname is not "chosen" but follows a certain pattern. 1st son--was most alwaysnamed for the father's father. Child #3: Peter-is 1st son and namedPeter after Eric's father. 1st daughter--for the father's mother. Eric'smother is Gunnild. 2nd daughte r is named after the mother's mother andMarta's mother was Else. And the Norwegian's never named anyone with 2christian first names and then a last name like we do here in America.Since the Bydebok says they had 3 children and lists only 2, th e onedaughter with the name Else Gunnild, which is more than highly unlikelyand with birthday 1857, I am assuming that Else was 2nd child and theone born in 1857.
Erik and Marta went to America April 19, 1867, Ole & Anna came in 1854,which means that they came 13 years later.
Where they came to first in America is still being researched.
Årdal Bydebok p. 151 says: (2) Erik Persson Hovland og kona Marta hadde 3 born: (should be: Gunildf. 1855, Else f. 1857, Peder f. 1862. Heile familien reiste til Am. 9.4.1867.
