Obituary:
Dodges Death Twice on Auto Track to Finally Die in Bed
INDIANAPOLIS, April 25 (AP)
---One of the unluckiest drivers in Indianapolis motor speedway history died in bed after all.
Jules Ellingboe, 56, twice escaped death by the narrowest margins in the annual 500-mile Memorial Day race. He tried repeatedly in the 1920's to win the Indianapolis classic, but crack-ups and mechanical troubles prevented him from ever finishing the grind.
He died last Wednesday of pneumonia in Eugene, Ore. He had lived in Silicoos, Ore., the last year.
Ellingboe's worst wreck at the speedway was in his last race in 1927. He had driven his Cooper Special only 62 miles when it smashed into the north wall. He was critically injured and retired from racing the next year. [2, 5, 7]
