    Death Aft 1307  [1
    Notes
    • She probably lived at Fere [Ferden].

      Carl M. Gunderson authored a typewritten table of the "Ancestral Forefathers of Paal Eirikson and Asle Dugalson" which has the designation "Gunderson Ringen's Manuscript #320." This table includes ancestries taken from Snorre Sturlasson's "Heimskringla," some of which must be considered mythical. In this table, Dugal Ruaidhrison of Kintyre is purported to be the father of Asle Dugalsson, Gjertrude Dugalsdotter til Tomb and Eirik Dugalsson (father of Paal Eirikson). Even though Anders Stillof's name was used as the source of this information, it is clear from reading his published papers that he refuted the connection between Asle of Valdres and Dugal Ruaidhrison. Many members of the Valdres Samband were given this table and have taken Carl Gunderson's information as fact, whereas there is no known historical documentation (see above). To summarize -- there is no historical documentation to support a genealogical connection between the Kvåle farm of Valdres and ancient Viking nobility.

      It is very unlikely that Dugal Ruaidhrisson, Lord of Kintyre and underking of the Hebrides (born before 1249 and died 1268), was the father of Asle Dugalson and his siblings. This genealogical connection probably has its origin with G. Munthe's very speculative suggestion that Pål Eiriksųn's father might have been a son of Dugal Ruaidhrisson. See: Samlinger til det norske folks sprog og historie. See also the article by Anders Stilloff entitled "Omkring Store-Kvale i Vestre Slidre: Sigvat Andorsųns og ulvarna Jodgeirsdatters Efterslekt til 1600" in Tidskrift for Valdres Historielag, Vol. 12, pp. 65-92, 1934. Stilloff explains why Munthe's speculation must be incorrect.

      Recent Y-DNA results from a grandson of the immigrant Peder Iversen Kvåle, known in the United States as Peter Peterson, show that Gjartrud's brother Asle, his 16th great grandfather, did not have the same results as Somerled, from whom Dugal Ruaidhrisson is believed to have descended. Of course this conclusion depends upon adequate documentation of an historical descent from Asle to the living person for whom the Y-DNA test was done. Somerled's Y-DNA had been determined earlier by Bryan Sykes on the basis of analyses from many of his descendants in Scotland.

      According to Lars Lųberg, Gjartrud's patronymic has now been proven to be Omsdotter rather than Dugalsdotter. This was done by Are S. Gustavsen. Apparently the patronymic Dugal was assumed by genealogists because Eirik Dugalson was a candidate for the father of Pål Eiriksson.

      ============================================================

      E-mail from Are S. Gustavsen:
      To the matter at hand: Lady Jartrud, or "fru Jartrud" as she has been mentioned until recently. The discovery of her patronymic was much of a coincidence. Some 5 years ago, in the winter of 2006, I had a longer telephone conversation with Mr. Jo Rune Ugulen. Mr. Ugulen was at the time in the final stages of completing his doctoral thesis on Norwegian Real Estate owners in parts of the old Gulating in medieval times, covering the modern counties of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane. Initially, dr. Ugulen had a question about a different Jartrud, of whom I had no new knowledge. But as I was checking the so-called "Akershusregisteret af 1622" (published 1916), I came across an entry of a certain "frue Giertrudt Ormszdotter" who had donated some land (6 hefseldebol) in a farm "Kierchehiem[b] paa Tho[e]den" to Hovedųya kloster (monastery), this in the 16th year of King Erik. The use of Akershusregisteret as a source for genealogical research (historical also, for that matter) poses quite a challenge. It is a letter registry containing brief summaries of some 2300 letters pertaining 4 medieval monasteries within the diocese of Oslo, and the two Danish gentlemen who made the register in 1622, were far from accurate in their transcribing work. However, the greatest challenge is to determine the correct date of the letters, while medieval letters often were dated by the year of the ruling king. Hence, the 16th year of king Erik may be 1295-96 if the letter is referring to king Erik Magnusson (1280-1299) or 1404-1405 if we are dealing with a letter made out during the reign of Erik of Pomerania (1397-1442). Many times we are unable to determine the exact year of issue, but in this case I found an entry of a supporting letter (actually two letters) dated 1315, in which Hovedųya kloster had traded the farm with the same name as the one (the aforementioned) fru Jartud had donated. My assessment of the totality of these entries, led to the conclusion that the donation made of fru Jartrud must have been made in 1295-96 in order for the monastery to be able to trade the same land in 1315. Dr. Ugulen did support my arguments and subsequently included a smaller discussion and a reference to the finding in his thesis. Follow this link to download the thesis: <http://ask.bibsys.no/ask/action/show?pid=070244472&kid=biblio>, even better try this one: <https://bora.uib.no/handle/1956/2108> The mention is found at page 125, footnote 240.
      As seen fru Jartrud proves to be a daughter of a man named Orm, consequently her brothers Erik and Asle may also have been sons of this very same Orm, provided that Jartrud were not solely a half sister sharing only the mother with Erik and Asle. Provided that at least Erik was an Ormsson, dr. Ugulen suggests a possible father to be one "Orm merkesmann", a high ranking nobleman only mentioned in 1276. I did plan to publish a minor article about this finding, but I have been otherwise engaged for a while. This spring I served my last term as the editor of Genealogen, which is, as you may know, the bi-annually distributed members magazine for Norsk Slektshistorisk Forening (Norwegian Genelogical Society). I do hope to do some more research on fru Jartud and the people that did surround her. So far I've only put forward a small 1-page ypothesis concerning Pål Erikssons wife and her family, linking a certain Pål Sigurdsson to Valdres and Sigrid Håreksdotter. (NST vol. 41).

      Thesis by Dr. Jo Rune Ugulen, p. 125, footnote 241:
      241. Jartrud, kona til Guttorm Gydason, er etter alt å dųma identisk med den fru Jartrud Ormsdotter som i 1295/96 gjev 6 hefseldebol i nordre garden i Kvem på Ųstre Toten til Hovedųya kloster (Akershusregisteret, s. 62, nr. 928). Dette er den einaste fru Jartrud vi kjenner frå denne tida, og sjųlv om det aktuelle brevet er dagsett i kong Eiriks 16. regjeringsår, kan det knapt vera tale om 1404/05 slik det også er foreslått i Akershusregisteret. I 1315 makeskiftar nemleg Hovedųya kloster bort garden Kvem på Toten mot Sundby i Jessheim på Romerike (Akershusregisteret, s. 82, nr. 1244– 1245; RN III, nr. 944 og 945). Takk til Are S. Gustavsen som har gjort meg merksam på dette. Dette medfųrer igjen at far til Pål Eiriksson kan ha heitt Eirik Ormsson, og ein potensiell farfar vert då Orm merkesmann som opptrer i 1276 (DN II, nr. 16a; RN II, nr. 142; jf. IA, s. 334; Magnus Lagabųtes saga, i Norges kongesagaer, bd. 4, s. 361). [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
