Happy birthday Eleanor!
Ellingboe marks 100 years
by Fred H. Keller
On the first day of winter, Dec. 21 [sic], 1895, the darkest day of the year, Eleanor Ellingboe was born on a farm, near Gibson in Manitowoc County. This past week she celebrated her 100th birthday with nephews and mieces at Sussex's WovenHearts.
Ellingboe's parents were Ingeborg and Helge Ellingboe, who had come to the United States from Norway as youngsters, married and had 13 children, 10 boys and three girls. Eleanor was the 13th and is the only one left of her generation.
Ellingboe attended a little country school at Zander, Wis., and on gaining maturity she came to Milwaukee and held a variety of jobs. The job she held the longest was at Milsco Leather Company in Milwaukee, a company that made the saddles and other leather parts for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company. She operated a sewing machine, making leather products such as straps, seats and post office delivery mail bags. She retired in 1960 at age 65 and has collected Social Security for 35 years.
Her one great passion was going to Borchert Field to see the old Brewers baseball team play in the Triiple A level of professional baseball. She transferred her love of baseball to the Braves when they came to town, becoming an avid radio "watcher" of baseball.
She is a lifelong blood donor and belongs to the 5,000-member Milwaukee WTMJ and WTMJ-TV donor group. She has a certificate signed by Milwaukee Mayor Frank Siedler and other dignitaries.
She has also been an avid lifelong reader.
She said she attributed her long life to "don't eat onions," and added, ":You just live and I didn't ever eat onions. I didn't like them."
Ellingboe never married, but she has a rich collection of nephews and nieces and their offspring to call family. [4]
