  Notes	Marilyn Holien Ettesvold skriver: "When Bertha was fifteen, she moved into Sacred Heart and lived with her sister Marias family while she went to school. When the Holiens moved o Maynard in 1897, Bertha went with them. She worked in the bank, an d later helped Maria at the hotel Knute had bought. Fore a time she operated a milliner's shop there, but the call to adventure sent her to North Dakota with her brothers in 1905. Bertha married Henry Sloan in 1913. (Han var en venn av brødrene hennes og var med dem til Nord Dakota da de dro dit. Kanskje var det ikke bare av eventyrlyst Bertha fulgte med dem nordover!). They lived on their Mercer County half -section, where Ervin was born in 1915. They sold the land and moved to Dunn County, where Helen was born in 1919. A lignite coal mind was opened on their land that same year and Henry went to work hauling coal for a $1 a load. They continued to live there, but rented out the fields, and coal was their income. In 1923 Henry suffered a paralyzing stroke, and di ed the next year.
