- He was briefly the Chamberlain of Emperor Louis the Pious, working closely with Empress Judith. He was a protector of her son, who later became the emperor Charles the Bald. A charge of infidelity was brought against him and Judith, but this was possibly for political reasons. After the death of Emperor Louis, and Bernard's alliance with Pippin II, Bernard was executed for treason under the orders of Charles the Bald. [2]
