Henry J. Svien, son of Johan Martin, lived with his Aunt and Uncle Helge Svien in sacred Heart, Minnesota. When Henry was sixteen his Uncle Helge died. Henry continued to live with his Aunt Berit and worked as a secondman in one of the local grain elevators. As he gained experience as a grain buyer, he was named manager of the Farmers Elevator at Minnesota Falls about four miles east of Granite Falls, Minnesota. It was here that Henry met his future wife Hulda Oslund. In 1917-1918 he served in World War I, with several months time in France.

After the war Henry returned to the elevator at Minnesota Falls, On June 29, 1919 Henry J. and Hulda Josephine Oslund were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Oslund. They made their home in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Hulda taught rural school until they moved to Hazel Run, Minnesota in 1924. Prior to their move, Henry had accepted the job as manager of the Hazel Run, Minnesota Produce Company.

It was at Hazel Run that a son, Donald Jean was born. (Don is the author of this Svien Saga). But the sad part was that Hulda died of blood poisoning on June 10, 1924. She is buried at Hawk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Henry was now between a rock and a hard spot -- an eight day old son and no mother. The grandparents, Emanuel and Mathilda Oslund, offered to raise Donald with financial help from Henry.

Henry continued his job at Hazel Run until in 1929, he took a management position at a Harold, South Dakota elevator. While at Granite Falls, Henry was an organizer of the American Legion Post in 1919. When at Hazel Run he served as a village trustee for several years.

After two years at Harold, South Dakota, the drought and grasshoppers brought farming to a halt. The elevator doors were closed and Henry returned to Sacred Hear and Berit Synnes. Mrs. Synnes owned two farms and for two years Henry repaired, painted, and did general cleanup. He also repaired and painted the Synnes home of Sacred Heart, inside and out.

In 1933-35 Henry served as manager of the Farmers Elevator Company of Hendricks, Minnesota. HE left Hendricks in 1936 to become manager of the Pennock Grain Company, and Feed Mill of Pennock, Minnesota. He held this position until he retired in 1957.

Henry remarried in 1944 to Minnie Arneson Nelson. Minnie had a son by her previous marriage, Roger. Minnie died of cancer March 2, 1966. Henry was always active with the American Legion, and Vinje Lutheran Church. He died January 28, 1968 and is buried next to his first wife Hulda at Hawk Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Henry married Hulda Josephine OSLUND on 29 Jun 1919 in Minnesota Falls MN USA. Hulda (daughter of Emanuel OSLUND and Mathilda) was born on 21 Aug 1897 in Sacred Heart, MN., USA; died on 10 Jun 1924 in Hazel Run, Minnesota, USA; was buried in Hawk Creek Lutheran Cementery.
