    Han kjempet sammen med Olav Haraldson (Den Hellige) på Stiklestad i 1830. Han hadde tidligere fått herregården Austrått av kongen omkring 1020. Kongen hadde konfiskert gården fra en oppsetsig høvding. Finn var av den mektige Arnmødlingdætten på Su nnmøre. Faren Arne og broren Kalv var også en av kong Olavs menn. Fra Ørlandet kunne Finn Arnesen holde øye med trafikken inn og ut av. Trondheimsfjorden, for kongen ville trygge sin adgang og utferder fra Trøndelag. I Harald Hardrådes saga omkring 1050 hører vi også om Finn Arnesens slekt: "Finn var gift med Bergljot, datter av Halvdan, som var Sigurd Syrs sønn, Halvdan var bror til Kong Olav den hellige og til Kong Harald Hardråde. Tora kong Haralds hustru , var brordatter til Finn Arneson. Finn og alle brødrene var kjære venner til kongen." Her er det inngifte så det suser og man må holde tunga rett i munnen for å holde rede på slektskapsforholdene. Det er til og med mulig at Tora ikke var brordatter til Finn Arnesen, men brordatter til Finns onkel, Torberg Arneson. Han la ut på viking sammen med Håkon Jarl Hviid på Gotland. De kom tilDanmark samtidig med at Harald Hardråde og Svein Estridsson skulle slåss. Håkon valgte å hjelpe Harald, mens Finn søttet kong Svein. Finn ble tatt til fange av kong Harald me d ble gitt grid, selv om han ikke selv ville det.

    Han måtte nedlegge sitt embete som under- eller visekonge, fordi Øygruppen ble avstått til Skottland. I følge Anders Stiloff (og Johannes T Nefstad som nok har det fra Stiloff) var han av norsk-skots ætt. Den skotske delen har jeg ikke funnet, men hans bestemor var av irsk ætt. Han var underkonge under kong Håkon Håkonson, og må ha vært en nær fortrolig av kongen, siden Håkon satte hans sønn som sysselmann over Valdres, etter at Dugal måtte nedlegge embetet sitt. Håkon kunne bare gitt bl affen i familien.
