    Hun regjerte fra 1560 - 1568. Hun ble halshugget av dronning Elisabeth etter å ha sittet i fangenskap i 20 år. Maria Stuart (eng. Mary, Queen of Scots), 1542-87, dronning av Skottland, datter av Jakob 5 og Maria av Guise. Gift 1558 med Frans 2 av Frankrike, vendte etter hans død (1560) tilbake til Skottland og overtok regjeringen. Respekterte først den sko tske reformasjon, men gikk senere, særlig etter giftermålet med Lord Darnley (1565), inn for katolisismen. Et opprør av de protestantiske lorder (1566) ble slått ned. S.å. deltok Darnley i mordet på hennes sekretær, italieneren Rizzio, men året et ter falt han selv som offer for en sammensvergelse ledet av Bothwell. Etter en skinnprosess, som endte med frifinnelse av Bothwell, giftet Maria seg med ham. Det førte til opprør, hun ble tvunget til å frasi seg tronen til fordel for sin sønn Jako b (6). 1568 flyktet hun til England, ble fengslet der og anklaget for å ha tilskyndet til sammensvergelse mot Elizabeth.
