Notes:

In the fall of 1996 Dick was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. For several years he had symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (uncomfortable cold hands) that may have been a sign of this disease. In the early summer of 1996 he experienced unusua l weakness while and Jutta bicycled in the Italian Alps. He was in the hospital ( ) on many occassions for lengthy periods during this illness and received a transplantation of his own stem cells after extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatm ent. He returned home in May (?) and had positive blood tests, but never regained his stamina. In the few days before his death he was unable to walk and spent all his time in a recliner in the living room. He suffered either a stroke or hear t failure while being fed on Saturday evening.
