PROFESSOR A. A. VEBLEN Når tiden kommer til at skrive nordmennenes historie i Amerika, vil sikkert et stort kapitel bli vidd til den merkelige bygdelagsbevegelse hvis begynnelse faller sammen med inngangen av det tyvende århundre. Og innen denne bevegelse vil det sæli g være ett navn som den vordende historieskriver ikke vil kunne undgå å gi en bred plass: ANDREW A. VEBLEN, Valdres Sambands formann fra dets begynnelse i 19ø2 til 192ø. I kraft av sin anseelse som gammel universitetslærer, sitt vinnende vese n og sin medfødte energi, bidrog han mektig til å gi den nye bevegelse vind under vingene.

    ANDREV ANDERSEN VEBLEN er født i Ozankee County, Wisconsin, den 24de september 1843 av foreldre Thomas Andersen Veblen (Vevle) og Kari Bunde, begge innvandret i 1847 fra Hurum. De tilhørte en sund, langlivet ætt og nådde selv den høie alder av res pektive 88 og 81 år. Sin første skolegang nøt den vordende professor i almueskolen på stedet og gikk 1871 til Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., hvor han i 1877 tildeltes graden B. A. og tre år senere graden A. M. Derfra bar det så til Johns Hopkins universitet, Bal timore, hvor han opholdt sig i to år og vesentlig la sig efter matmatikk og fysikk. Allerede før sitt ophold ved Johns Hopkins universitet hadde han virket som lærer i engelsk ved Luther College, Decorah, Iova. I 1883 ansattes han som assisterende professor i matematikk ved Iova statsuniversitet. Tre år senere byttet han denne st illing med en lærestol i fysikk, og virket uavbrutt i denne stilling til 1905, da beklagelige akademiske forhold bragte ham til ta avsked. Han kjøpte så en farm i Washington County, Minn., og flyttet til Minneapolis, bygdelagsbevegelsens erklært e hovedarne. Her blev han i 5 år og flyttet så til vestkysten, til San Diego, Carlifornien, hvor han siden ha bodd.

    Som universitetslærer utfoldet prof. VEBLEN en energisk virksomhet og fungerte en tid som formann i Iova Academy of Seience, i hvis skrifter man finner flere interessante innlegg fra hans hånd. Da han i 1903 for første gang besøkte sine fedres lan d og tillike Sverige, brukte han øinene bedre enn de fleste, og resultatet blev efter tilbakekomsten en rekke utmerkede foredrag, således et om Valdres, et om domkirkene i Trondhjem og Upsala og et om Norge i sin helhet. Allerede før den tid hadd e hans interesse for alt norsk bragt ham inn på studiet av det gamle nordiske båt- og skibsbygning, og han holdt på flere steder vel besøkte foredrag om dette emne. Disse foredrag kan betraktes som innledning til den virksomhet der særlig vil bevare hans navn i norsk-amerikanske annaler, nemlig hans store innsats i bygdelagsbevegelsen og hans utrettelige virksomhet i Valdres Sambands tjeneste. Plassen tillate r ikke nogen nærmere omtale av dette emne, som han forøvrig selv har behandlet i sitt fortjente verk "The Valdres book", Minneapolis, 1920. Sitt største arbeid nedla han selvsagt som redaktør av foreningens tidsskrifter "Valdres Helsing- og det s fortsettelse "Samband", der utgikk fra desember 1903 til november 1917 og utgjør henved seks tusen sider. Eftersom tiden går, vil disse fjorten bind bli en uvurderlig kilde for norsk-amerikansk historieskrivning, ikke minst når det gjelder de n innsats valdreser har gjort i Nordvestens rydning og civilisasjon.

    Prof. VEBLEN har vært gift to ganger. Hans første hustru Kirsti Hougen døde 1908, efterlatende fire sønner og fire døtre, av hvilke den eldste, Oswald skal særskilt omtale. VEBLEN Det er risikabelt a være dogmatisk i slike ting; men om jeg skulde nevne den mann av Valdresætt som har nådd høiest som videnskapelig tenker, vilde jeg ikke betenke mig på å utpeke prof. THORSTEIN VEBLEN. Som alle fremragende, særmerkte ånder ha r han gått sine egne, ikke mengdens veier, og de førte ham inn på stier som ligger fjernt fra den slagne jernbanerute til heit betalte og betrodde stillinger ved landets store universiteter. Men i de tenkningens stille verksteder, hvor i socialpol itiske ideer veies og tumles med ærlig og uforfærdet uten skjelen til Rockefelers millionpensjonsfond for utslitte professorer, der undlater man ikke å regne med forfatteren til "The theory of the leisure class" og andre social-økonomiske verker. Som sin bekjente bror, prof. Andrew Veben, blev han født på en farm i Manitowoc County, Wis., av foreldre Thomas Andersen Veblen (udv. fra Vevle i Yang 1847 og Kari Bunde. Senere har prof. VEBLEN utgitt flere vektige verker inn en sin videnskap; "The Theory of Business enterprise", 1904, "Imperial Germany and the Industrial revolution", 1915, "An enquiry into the Nature of peace", 1917, "The Higher Learning in Ameri ca", 1918, The Vested Interests", 1919, "The Place of Seience in modern Civilization", 1918 og endelig "The Engineers and the Prize System", 1921. Ved siden derav var han 1896-1905 redakter av tidsskriftet "Journal of Political Economy". Sine ferier tilbringer VEBLEN gjernest i en sommerhytte som han har bygget sig på Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin, og der er han ofte best oplagt til forfatterarbeide.
