Han var en aktiv nybrottsmann, pioner i Vesten, og ryddet en flott farm sør for Decorah. Han var en flink håndverker og han laget alle møblene de hadde. Spesielt var han flink med valnøtttre. Han bygde orglet i Springfield kirken og var selv organ ist der i mange år.
