In the General Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War with Spain (microfilm: M871, 126 rolls, roll #32), he is listed as Knudt E. Ellingboe, H2 Wisconsin Infantry, Spanish War, Private, Corporal. He served in Company H (Manitowoc) of 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in Puerto Rico 28 April 1898 to 18 September 1898.

He did not have a middle name, despite his army record. His first name was pronounced with a hard "K." This was confirmed by his sister Nona (Ellinora) in a recorded conversation (11 Jun 1988) with his son Ellsworth, grandson James, and neice Lois Ellingboe Riopelle. Ellsworth said that he used to pronounce his father's name with a hard "K" but then changed the pronunciation to "Newt" after his father's death and after grandson Richard had been given the middle name "Knudt," which was usually pronounced "Newt." In Vang, I (James) was told that people from Slidre couldn't pronounce a hard "K," so the name may have been pronounced "Newt" in Slidre, but I have not had verification that this was true -- it seems unlikely.
