On March 10, 1849, brothers John and Jorgen [George]Vilhelmsen Thune set out from Vang, Valdres, Norway, and immigrated to America. John settled first in the Norwegian settlement of Muskego, Wisconsin. Then, on July 2nd, 1850, he arrived in Winn eshiek County, Iowa, where he settled in an area known as "Washington Prairie" southeast of the thriving village of Decorah.* John claimed 81 acres in Glenwood Township, Section 30, the N half of the NW quarter. One of the early trails or road s in the area cut across the southwest corner of his property.

On June 11th, 1855, John married Martha Lewis (Larsdtr?). She had been born near Bergen, Norway, in Voss, and was orphaned as a young girl. Growing up in the homes of strangers, Martha had immigrated in 1849 with the family of John Bragstad, settling first in Koshkonong, WI (Dane Co.), then coming to Sp ringfield Twp., Winneshiek Co., IA, in 1851.

Han dro sammen med broren Jon til USA og er en av de første fra Vang som reiste over. I Amerika ble han kalt Gerorg. It is presumed that Jorgen went to Dubuque Co.,IA, as on July 4, 1851, he filed a "declaration of intent to become a citizen" there.

Two months after John and Martha's wedding, Sarah Garden became the bride to Thomas, while Mary Hovy became Jorgen's bride. These brothersh celebrated their weddings on the same day, August 21, 1855.

Clarine "Skip" Andersen skriver om han og foreldrene i "Thune Family in America": I USA kalte han seg Thomas Two years later on March 17, 1851, their younger brother,Thron [Thomas], along with parents, Vilhelm Jonson and Kjersti Jorgensdatter Thune [Krosshaug] also left Vang, immigrated to America, and settled in Winneshiek County. Thomas homesteade d 80 acres in Glenwood Township, the S half of the SW quarter of Section 19, on land neighboring John's. Jorgen was known to be in the area about the same time. Two months after John and Martha's wedding, Sarah Garden became the bride to Thomas, while Mary Hovy became Jorgen's bride. These brothers celebrated their weddings on the same day, August 21, 1855.
